MAN UTD 3 - 0 EVERTON

Manchester United's Darren Fletcher produced a superb strike as he helped his side ease to a win over Everton.

Fletcher converted United's dominance into a goal when he got over a hip-high ball and sent a shot into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Michael Carrick swept in the second after being picked out by Ryan Giggs.

Antonio Valencia completed Everton's misery when his angled far post shot went in via a deflection as the champions ran out comfortable winners.

Manchester United return from the international break desperate to reassert themselves in the Premier League after slipping to third in the table.

You go to Old Trafford expecting what you always get... It's hostile, the fans are all going to be up for their players, but you just have to get your head down and play

The good news for United is that Everton's Premier League record against them is abysmal. The Toffees have lost 26 out of 34 encounters against United and won only three.

David Moyes's side have struggled for form and consistency this campaign, not helped by a lengthy injury list that has deprived them of several first-team regulars including captain Phil Neville, Mikel Arteta and Phil Jagielka.

One player who has come to the fore in their absence is 18-year-old Jack Rodwell, whose assured displays in midfield have reportedly caught the eye of Sir Alex Ferguson. Rumours abound that the Old Trafford boss will make a £20m move for the youngster as soon as January.

Ferguson will be free to assess the teenager's talents from the home dugout after the Football Association confirmed the United manager's two-match touchline ban will not start until the trip to Portsmouth on 28 November, and not on Saturday as widely reported.

Carling Cup holders Manchester United will host Tottenham in the quarter-finals, while Manchester City will be at home to Arsenal.

Chelsea face a trip to Blackburn in the last eight, while Portsmouth will play Aston Villa at Fratton Park.

The game between United and Spurs will be a repeat of last year's final when Sir Alex Ferguson's side beat the White Hart Lane club on penalties.

The quarter-final matches will take place week beginning 30 November.

City beat Arsenal 4-2 earlier this season in controversial circumstances and their tie could again pit Emmanuel Adebayor against his former Gunners team-mates.

Adebayor was banned for a stamp on Robin van Persie and fined for his celebration after scoring in City's win.
