I am in my second 40 day mantra practice. I am chanting to Ganesh and Lakshmi. I would love to hear about other people's experiences with chanting mantras.

I believe in the power of mantras and am making a collection of them to give them meaning that the common man can relate to. The meanings are not authentic but inspired within me from the basic meaning.

I write the mantras everyday while I chant. I find the Gayathri and Ganesha mantra very calming.

Om bhur bhuva savaha; tatsavithur varenyam;
bhargo devasya dimahi; dhiyo yo nah prachodayat

We meditate on the supreme divine through the power of the rising sun
And all the elements that make our being
To awaken and enlighten our intellect and mind
To reach and attain our higher purpose and higher goals

Vakra thunda mahakaya, surya koti samaprabha;
Niru vignyam kurume deva; sarva karyeshu sarvada

Lord Ganesha, the remover of all that is negative, flex my mind from my stubborn ways
You are bright as a thousand suns, bring me the light of your wisdom
Remove all obstacles and bless all my work with positive energy.

I am giving below two mantras praying for peace along with the meaning:
Om asato maa satgamaya
tamasomaa jyotirgamaya !
mrityomaam amritham gamaya !

Om poornadha poornamidham poornaath poornamudanchyathe !
poornasya poornmaadhaaya poornamevavasiyathe !!

Om shantihi ! shantihi ! shantihi !!

Om, From the unreal lead me to the Real
From darkness lead me to Light
From death lead me to Immortality.
Om, All that is invisible is verily the Infinite Brahman.
All that is also the infinite Brahman.
The whole universe has come out of the Infinite Brahman.
Brahman is infinite although the whole universe has come out of it.

Nice to find a place where an area of my research is discussed, though it a part of the holistic domain of Tantra. I find Tantra as one of the Sanskrit Sciences inherited by the spiritual culture of India, that is Bharatam.
