Fundamental steps

The idea of hypnosis is actually an umbrella that is used to refer to many parts. We use hypnotic induction to give ourselves explicit suggestions, which allow us to be able to change a certain thing we want to change in our lives. There are some fundamental steps towards achieving a change in our lives, and they must flow in order; they are

1. An understanding of what the conscious and subconscious mind is, which includes understanding how they are similar, how they are different, why it's important to understand each one. This is the foundation for all the work which will be done in the process of self hypnosis.

2. Autoquestioning, which is a method that can be used to get information directly from the subconscious mind, bypassing the conscious reasoning part of the mind. This is a very important step, for with it we clarify what the source or real issue of a dysfunction is, which may be something that seems absolutely absurd to us consciously, and thus we'd never be able to guess without this crucial step.

3. Suggestion formulation is then used to formulate suggestions which will counter the real issue which was discovered using autoquestioning previously. Suggestion formulation is crucial, and there are two main parts it is composed of: verbal formulation and image formulation. The ultimate goal is to create an image suggestion, however this is created from a verbal suggestion.

4. Suggestion application is then employed, which will require an understanding of hypnotic induction, scene visualization, deepening into a hypnotic state, and other key principles.

Contrary to what you might believe, no single step in this pyramid of concepts is known as "self hypnosis", rather, when all these are performed together, then you can benefit from self hypnosis, which will allow you to take back control of your brain and therefore your life.

Thank you for reminding me to indulge in self-hypnosis! I used to do this more often. I had a supervisor at work who studied under Erikson (forget first name, not Eric) who was a well-known hypnotist dealing in the mental health area. I was often the subject my boss's hypnotheapy demonstrations to mental health professionals.

Anyhoo - I've learned from him that hypnosis is a combination of relaxation and concentration. What I do: Self-relaxation by counting backwards from 1-10 slowly, usually along with my breaths. I add to it suggestions for relazation like, "10 you are relaxing more and more," "9, deeper and deeper relaxed"....I also use technique of relaxing the muscle groups in my body starting with the head. Then I tell myself things that I want to believe. Resistance to new truths is less during relaxation and hypnosis.

I often do this in the second person "you" voice: "You are becomming more and more relaxed. Your confidence is growing every day...."

Hypnosis is the induction of belief through suggestion. Self hypnosis is convincing yourself that something is true through repeated suggestion and reinforcement. I use self-hypnosis at the dentist to keep from gagging when they are working on my teeth. I close my eyes and repeat to myself, "I am calm and in control". I breathe deeply and reinforce my belief in the abilities of the dental team! It works great. During walks I repeat silently some affirmations and prayers that vary from day to day, but it helps me to get "psyched up" for a difficult day. There are also self-hypnosis CDs and guided meditations online; I am not sure whether that really counts as self-hypnosis, however.

Have delved in self Hypnosis for about forty years.
Still not proficient with it but have had some success.
Still learning after all these years.

I have been using a form of self hyponsis for several years to help control pain, but, I would like to learn more about using it for health and weight problems any suggestions welcome

Hi Akli,
when first time I saiw this group in ur page, I was like Awwwwwwwwww.....

Hypnosis always attract my intention, eventhough during this time I only saw it on TV or read about it. I'm so curious and wanna experience it by myself.
If U have practical advise or formulation for self, pls pls share with us, THANKS !!
