I live in a small town in Texas where you know nearly all your neighbors and can give directions to anywhere from one of the three red lights that flash on Wise Street.

My favorite pair of boots, worn thin on the bottom, needed attention. I wondered if they could be resoled. Curiously, my small town has a boot/shoe repair shop.

Pulling into the small parking area, a familiar 1966 American pop song coursed through my head. As I walked in the door of the shoe repair shop, I was surprised to hear the same music over their intercom system: "These boots are made for walkin' and that's just what they'll do...One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you."

Smiling at my own private serenade, I set my boots on the counter, took a long look around at the multiples of shoes in various states of repair, and smiled at the man behind the counter. Looking at the boots, he determined he couldn't fix them.

Thanking him, and turning to leave, I thought, "There aren’t many places left like this shoe shop. We've grown to be a disposable society, given to replacing items instead of repairing them."

Unlike much of the rest of the country, one place in California, run by Pete Hodian, has been repairing people's shoes and boots for over fifty years. His shop is simply called "Pete's Shoe Repair" and stands as a monument to simpler times.

Pete grew up during the Depression era and learned the value of working hard and stretching a dollar. He also learned the value of life-long friendships.

"Always remember there are other things more important than money. Poor people come in to have their shoes fixed. I don't charge them. But they don't forget me. They bring me cookies, fruit, something. You just have to trust one another.”

Pete lives by that motto – “Trust one another.”

Every morning, a gaggle of guys meanders into the shoe shop for coffee and shop talk. All retired, the men's laughter flows as thick as their stories. Customers trickle in, exchanging greetings and smiles. It is a good life, a simple life. And a life that has given Pete and wife, Pat, memories in abundance. Until her recent death, Pat successfully played the stock market, giving them material comforts they'd not known growing up, even if they are not wealthy by California standards.

Yet Pete knows he's wealthy as loyal friends and constant customers enrich his days.

He found something he enjoyed and became proficient in it. Then he set out to live his life creating a niche for his work. I think Pete is highly successful. He is content and knows he's making a difference in the community where he lives. There are few shops offering services like his – in fact, the next one is over 10 miles away in another little town.

I want to live like Pete. I want to be content with my life, do what I love, and be surrounded by good people, don't you? Now Pete didn't get there by accident; he made the choices throughout his life that brought him to this place. He understood years ago that the decisions he made in the “yesterdays” of his life, determined his life right now.

I have asked myself how I want life to be in the years to come. As I answer that, I need to begin making choices accordingly.

How about you? Have you thought about how what you do today is creating the life you will have tomorrow? I encourage you to be like Pete -- live consistent and steady, trust people, and be trustworthy in return. And as you do, don't forget that…

Some Enlightened Thanksgiving Thoughts

I am THANKFUL that I no longer embrace some of my earlier childhood beliefs such as:

>I am THANKFUL that God is not a PUNISHER sending people to hell eternally.
>I am THANKFUL that we're not brought into the world FLAWED and sinful, but in the image of God
>I am THANKFUL that we are not VICTIMS but participants in the creation of nature and our very lives.
