- About Me:
- I am from Fairbanks, Alaska and have lived here for over 30 years. Part of that time, I lived in the bush-extremely rural Alaska, and spent a lot of time miles from any road or town and part of our time there in a small town called Eagle.
I enjoy beading and hope sometime soon to have a small bead shop where I can sell my jewelry, and some beads as well. I see that aspect of the "shop" as being an online shop, but I would also love to teach beading techniques, to pass on what my "Grandma Sarah", an older native woman in Eagle taught me. She stood up against several other women in the native community there to teach me. they felt only natives should know, but Sarah felt that anybody who wanted to learn should and that knowledge shouldn't be limited to just certain groups of people. It was her feeling that since no younger women came to her to learn, she would teach anybody who was interested. And I was very interested! We spent a lot of time in the woods gathering supplies to make birchbark baskets, she taught me her style of beading-traditional flower embroidery with beads, and she would feed me "native" food when I came to visit-unfortunately usually Indian soup with potatoes, spam, and onions. Actually, not bad-almost as good as fishhead soup with the fish eyes floating around in the broth.
Eventually, I will download some pictures from my time there, it was an experience very few get to have these days and I'm very glad to have the memories from those years and the knowledge that I am capable of handling a wide variety of situations - running a motorboat upriver in the dark with just moonlight as my guide to avoid the shallows and any big rocks, managing the fall fishing camp, setting the nets in the eddies and picking them twice daily while my husband (now my ex) was in town working for a few weeks. It's so different that Fairbanks still feels like a big city most of the time.
After moving into Fairbanks, I eventually went to college and earned a BSc degree in Biology , with a minor in Psychology and Russian studies. I am close to a graduate degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, but dropped the program after I developed some serious health problems and serious stress from an abusive relationship out of which I was trying to get myself and my youngest son. Life goes on, and I'm strong and capable and safe.
Except I can't keep my computer free and safe from the nasties despite the software I have for security!
