What is a Totem exactly?

I was talking to a girl about seeing birds all the time,and that I imagine that they talk to me, and when I see them especially when they fly across my path that they are telling me that I am on the right path and that I am loved. It's not that I actually here them talking to me, I just DECIDED that whenever I see birds that it will be a sign to me. She said that she had always felt like my Totem was a bird. She says that her Totem is a bird too. Do totems have anything to do with spirit guides?

Totems are the animals that are normally related to Shamanism religions/beliefs. Where for instance the Indians belived that animal sprirts looked after them and their dead.
Have you seen Totem polls? They are made up of different animals and each one has a mythical story that goes with it.
I believe we all have animals that represent us... mine is a Lion. Symon is good at getting peoples animal spirits.
Also with birds, I believe that is your guides, birds do it everytime, its your guides way of saying that they are there.
